Gerrard lifts the League Cup trophy.
Liverpool FC defeated Cardiff City 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The match ended 1-1 at full time before the two sides scored a goal each during the extra time. Mason put the Welsh side ahead after just 18 minutes on the clock to send the travelling Cardiff fans in to wild jubilation. Martin Skrtel equalized for the Reds after 59 minutes. The goal came off a corner kick that was taken by Stewart Downing.
Substitute,Dirk Kuyt appeared to have grabbed a 108th minute winner for the Merseyside club, but with 2 minutes to play, Ben Turner turned the game around with a goal for Cardiff City.
Steven Gerrard missed the first penalty kick of the match and Charlie Adam followed in a similar fashion. Two Cardiff players missed their penalties before Glen Johnson made it 3-2.
Incidentally, Anthony Gerrard, a cousin of the Liverpool captain missed the fianl penalty kick and that was enough for Kenny Dalglish to win his first Carling Cup trophy with the club and Liverpool's first title since their 2006 FA Cup win over West Ham United. Meanwhile, that match was also won by penalties.
Liverpool have now won their last three titles on penalties.
They are: 1. 2005 Champions League 2. 2006 FA Cup 3. 2012 League Cup
This is the 8th League Cup title for Liverpool.
