English clubs continue to falter!

Out of the three English clubs that were on duty in European competitions, only Arsenal won their match and still crashed out of their competition. Arsene Wenger led his team to a remarkable 3-0 victory over AC Milan of Italy in the return leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday night. Goals from Lauren Koscielney, Tomas Rosicky and Robin Van Persie capped a fine performance from the Gunners in the first half, but the team failed to get more goals in the second half despite having series of chances. Van Persie was also one of the culprits on the night. AC Milan eventually qualified for the last eight on a 4-3 aggregate win. Manchester United and Manchester City were tipped as favourites to win the Europa League following their ouster from the Champions League in the group phase, but the duo lost their matches on Thursday night. While Roberto Mancini's men were pipped 1-0 in Lisbon, Sir Alex Ferguson's team were beaten at home for the second consecutive time in Europe. This is the first time since 1996 that United will suffer back-to-back defeats at home in any European competition. Chelsea are trailing red hot Napoli by three goals to one in the Champions League. Following the recent string of poor results, the London club fired Andre Villas Boas earlier this month. If Chelsea fail to get an unlikely 2-0 win over the Italians next week, there is a great possibility that no English club will get to the quarter final of either the Champions League or the Europa League. This should be a concern to the football authorities in England. If the Premiership is truly the best League in the World, this kind of situation shouldn't happen. A lot of people still believe that the Spanish La Liga is better and more technical than the highly publicized English Premier League, but one shouldn't forget the fact that English teams played  in six of the last seven Champions League finals between 2005 and 2011.
