When John W Henry bought Liverpool for a fee of £350 million in October 2010, many Anfield faithfuls were hopeful of a better performance from England's most successful English club in Europe, but the situation of things at the moment is clearly different from what was envisaged by the Fenway Sports Group that has spent a total of £140 million since then. The Reds have either lost to clubs that have never beaten them before or those that have not claimed victory over them in over a decade. Wigan Athletic recorded their first ever win over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend. The match ended 2-1 in favour of the lactics that have not one any of their last 6 games before then. QPR defeated Liverpool 3-2 after the Reds were leading 2-0 in the 76th minute. The Carling Cup trophy that was won in February was their first trophy in six years, but that doesn't guarantee them a Champions League spot. Dalglish bought players that cannot fit into any of the teams that are currently in the top 5 on the league table. Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam,Jordan Henderson,Andy Carroll will definitely not play for Arsenal,Chelsea,Tottenham, Manchester United or Manchester City.
This is one of the reasons the Reds are currently three points above Norwich City that gained promotion to the EPL at the end of last season.
The team have only scored 36 goals in the Premier League this season. That is just one more goal than the 35 league goals Christiano Ronaldo has scored for Real Madrid and Blackburn Rovers that is in the relegation zone has even scored over 40 goals this season.
Andy Carroll has only scored 5 league goals since January 2011,while Jordan Henderson has misplaced series of passes and has been dominated by several other midfielders in the league. Charlie Adam is one of the poor buys Liverpool made this season.
Dalglish has left Maxi Rodriguez and Fabio Aurelio on the bench, despite the great performance that the duo have put up under Rafael Benitez. Maxi was one of the best Liverpool players last season, but the Scot manager has decided to use him occasionally and he has always played better than Henderson,Adam,Downing and Carroll.
The principal owner of the club has made it clear that is target for the season is a Champions League spot, but with 8 matches to go, the Reds will definitely finish below the top four or even the top six. They have 42 points as against 50 points that Chelsea and Newcastle have amassed so far this season. The goal scoring record of the team is their poorest in the history of the club and the present midfield setup of the team is the weakest in over a decade.
There is no doubt that Kenny Dalglish is NOT the right man to lead Liverpool to the Champions League unless World-class players are signed, while the likes of Carroll,Henderson,Downing and Carroll are sold. Luis Enrique also need a good player to pressurize him at the left back position. He has been a suspect against top clubs like Arsenal,Manchester United and Manchester City this season.
With Rafael Bentitez still waiting in the job market, one can never rule out a return for the Spaniard who was sacked two years ago. Frank Rijkaard, Guus Hiddink or Marcelo Bielsa are some other managers that the FSG might consider to take over from King Kenny next season.
