Downing gives Liverpool Europa advantage.

Stewart Downing scored the only goal in Thursday's Europa League match between Liverpool and FC Gomel at the Central Stadion in Belarus. The match was the first leg of the third qualifying round of this season's Europa League. The home side dominated a larger part of the game,but they failed to convert the chances they had. Brad Jones had a lot of work to do in Liverpool's goal. The Australian was lucky not to have conceded a goal after the home side hit the woodwork in the first half. In the 60th minute, Downing cut in from the right before firing a shot into the net. Liverpool will host the Belarusian side at Anfield next Thursday. Brendan Rodgers expressed his delight after winning his first competitive match in charge of the Reds.
