Manchester United are through to the quarter final of this season's English FA cup. The premier league leaders overcame a stubborn Reading side by 2-1 at the Old Trafford stadium on Monday night.
Javier Hernandez almost gave United the lead after just two minutes of action. The Mexican twisted in the penalty box before firing a shot that was blocked by Reading. Danny Welbeck and Antonio Valencia failed to tap the ball into an empty net.
Moments later, Nicky Shorey's effort was dealt with by David de Gea and Nemanja Vidic. In the 12th minute, Vidic and Noel Hunt had a collision. The two players lost some blood while the medics attended to them.
In the 22nd minute, Adam Federici pulled a world-class save to deny United a deserved lead. Tom Cleverly's low shot was heading into the net before the Australian palmed the ball away. Ashley Young thought he had scored with a good side footed finish, but Adam turned the ball around the post to keep his team in the game.
Eight minutes later, McAnuff's penalty appeal was turned down by the referee. Phil Jones shoved the Reading player aside in the penalty box.
Antonio Valencia had a chance to make it 1-0 in the 38th minute after receiving a good pass from Ashley Young. The Latino fired a shot at a Reading defender and Phil Jones' subsequent follow up to that effort landed him in trouble. The Englishman got injured and he was substituted by Nani.
On the stroke of half time, Adam Le Fondre forced David De Gea to make a stunning save. Nani showed what his team mates had been missing when he fired a 20 yard shot that came off the upright.
Midway through the second half, Robin Van Persie replaced Ashley Young to add more bit to the attack. Nani broke the deadlock on 69 minutes after a nice job by Antonio Valencia.
David De Gea had to provide a great save to deny Reading an equaliser in the 71st minute. Javier Hernandez made it 2-0 to the home side a minute later. Nani's lovely cross was turned in by the Mexican star.
Jobi McAnuff reduced the deficit after 81 minutes, but that late goal was not enough to deny United a quarter final ticket where they will meet Chelsea or Middlesbrough.
