Nigeria drops in latest FIFA rankings

The Super Eagles of Nigeria has dropped by three spots according to the latest monthly CocaCola sponsored ranking of the member states of the world football governing body.

The African champions gained five points from their 2-2 draw against Mexico to amass 785 points, but countries like USA,Japan and other Asian nations that were involved in World cup qualifiers and high profile friendlies gained more points than Nigeria.

According to FIFA, there are several factors that influence the ranking of teams. A friendly match has '1' as importance coefficient while a World cup qualifier has '2.5'. A World cup or FIFA confederations cup match has '3'.

Another factor is the strength of opposition. For example, England lost two spots in the latest ranking because of their 2-2 draw against Brazil that was ranked 19th last month.

For Nigeria to make a significant leap in the next rankings, the team must beat Namibia in next week's World cup qualifier and also win their match against Tahiti and Uruguay at the confederations cup.
