EPL review

The Barclays premiership started with some exciting events over the weekend. The opening match of the season was played at the famous Anfield Road. Liverpool defeated Stoke City by a lone goal. Daniel Sturridge scored the first goal of the season.

Simon Mignolet produced a heroic performance by saving a late penalty that was awarded to the visitors.

Arsenal opened their season with an embarrasing 3-1 home defeat against Aston Villa. The match was played at the Emirates stadium. Oliver Giroud gave the Londoners the lead before Christian Benteke bagged a brace for the Villans.

Swansea City were white-washed at the Liberty stadium. The reigning League cup champions succumbed to a 4-1 mauling by Manchester United.

Chelsea fans welcomed Jose Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge with a 2-0 win over Hull City. Frank Lampard and Oscar scored the goals for the Blues.

On Monday,Manchester City crushed Newcastle United by 4-0 at the Etihad stadium. Manuel Pellegrini was indeed a happy man as he started his premier league career in a great way.

On Wednesday, Chelsea moved to the summit of the league. The London club defeated a hard fighting Aston Villa by 2-1 in London. Antonio Luna scored an own goal before Christian Benteke equalised with a fantastic finish within the penalty area.

However, Branislav Ivanovic scored the winning goal for Chelsea with a thumping header. Aston Villa were denied a genuine penalty late in the game,while the referee also refused to dismiss Ivanovic for a foul.
