The Spanish primera liga continued with action across different Spanish stadiums over the weekend.
Real Madrid retained their third spot with a 2-0 win over Granada on Saturday evening. The 'Los Blancos' couldn't find the back of the net in the first half that featured Gareth Bale,Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in a three man attack line.
Bale was withdrawn at the interval and that tactical approached seemed to work as the home side took the lead within the opening 15 minutes of the half. Cristiano Ronaldo controlled the ball in front of the 18 yard box and dribbled two defenders before unleashing a swift shot into the bottom corner of the Granada goal post.
Karim Benzema scored the second some minutes later after the Granada defence failed to close down Marcelo's surging run into the penalty area.
FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are tied on the same number of points.
On Sunday, Barcelona recorded a 3-0 win over Malaga at the Nou camp. Atletico Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano by 4-2 at the Calderon. Athletic Bilbao ran out as 5-1 winners over Osasuna.
Real Valladolid defeated Villareal by 1-0. The "Yellow submarines" were unable to close the gap on the 4th position despite parading Nigeria's Ike Uche who has scored a total of 12 goals in the league.
Sevilla went down 3-2 at home to Levante. Sevilla are now placed 7th with 31 points while the visitors are four points behind on the 8th position.
Valencia played a 2-2 draw against Espanyol the Mestalla stadium. The 2004 league champions are currently placed 10th on the log standings with 25 points.
They are now 17 points behind fourth placed Athletic Bilbao and a place in next season's UEFA Champions league is now almost impossible.
On Monday night, Real Sociedad will host Elche in a late kick off.
