Athletic Bilbao defeated Schalke 04 of Germany at the Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Spanish strikers Raul Gonzalez and Fernando Llorente Torres scored two goals on either side. Athletic Bilbao came from 2-1 down to win the match by four goals to two. Radamel Falcao scored his 7th goal of the competition before Mame Diouf equalised for the visitors in the 38th minute. Toto Salvio made it 2-1 with a minute to the end of the game at Estadio Vicente Calderon in Madrid.

In the final game of the Europa League first leg quarter final games, Sporting Lisbon recorded a 2-1 win at home to Metalist Khirkiv. The Ukrainian team will be happy for scoring an away goal. The Ukrainians will progress to the last four if they can get a one nil win next week.
