The Spanish under 23 team played three games at the London 2012 Olympics without scoring a goal. The triumph of the Spanish senior national team in the past three major International tournaments had installed their under 23 side as the clear favorites for the Olympic gold medal. Amazingly, the Spaniards lost their first ever football match to Japan before going down against Honduras in their second match. Both games ended 1-0 in favour of their opponents. Their last group match against Morocco ended goalless. The presence of players like Juan Mata,Jordi Alba and David De Gea couldn't save the Olympic team from their poor showing in London.
