Liverpool allowed Andy Carroll to join West Ham United on loan during the summer transfer window while the scout team of the Merseyside club failed to offer £7m for Clint Dempsey.

Sturridge: "I'm humbled and happy here. I've not signed here to play for a couple of years and then move on. I've signed to be here for as long as possible. It's humongous club-for me, one of the biggest in the world. To have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing. I see myself as a striker. I think I perform best there because my attributes, I believe, are used best as a central striker."

Sturridge has made only one premier league start in an injury-affected season, is believed to have had a medical at Liverpool last month.
The ex-Manchester City striker scored a total of 13 goals last season. His last match was against West Brom on November 17,2012.

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre: "Daniel is somebody we've always had in our sights and somebody the manager has had huge interst in right from the start.

The transfer fee is in the region of £12 million. The former Coventry youngster may make his debut in the FA  cup next weekend.
