EPL week 24 review: City stumbles at home

The English premiership has reached week 24 of the current 2013/2014 league season. The week 23 leaders-Manchester City stumbled at the Etihad stadium on Monday night.

The 'Citizens' lost their first home game of the season when they went down by 1-0 to Chelsea. Branislav Ivanovic's 30th minute thunderous strike was enough to send Manuel Pellegrini's men off the top spot.

Jose Mourinho's approach to the match was against the expectation of many people who thought the Portuguese tactician was going to set up his team to defend against the free scoring Manchester City. 

Chelsea are now level on points with the City on 53 points,but they are placed third due to an inferior goal difference.

In the Tyneside derby, Newcastle United stumbled to a 3-0 home loss in their match against Sunderland at the St James' park. Fabio Borini scored via a penalty while Adam Johnson also added his name on the scorers chart.

West Ham United defeated Swansea City by 2-0 despite playing the entire second half with 10 men. Andy Carroll was sent off for a elbowing an opponent in the first half. Kevin Nolan scored a brace in that match. That defeat has cost the Swansea manager his job. Michael Laudrup was fired as the manager of the Welsh team on Tuesday after recording 6 losses in 8 matches.

Everton came from a goal down to beat Aston Villa by 2-1 to climb up the table. The 'Toffees' are now placed 5th on the log standings.

Tottenham Hotspur slipped to the 6th position after playing a 1-1 draw against Hull City on Saturday.

Charlie Adam produced a scintillating performance as he scored a brace against Manchester United at the Britannia stadium in Stoke-on-Trent.

Stoke City defeated Man United by 2-1 to condemn the champions to their 8th league defeat in 24 matches. That was Stoke City's first win over their visitors in 30 years. The last time the visitors lost 8 matches in 24 league games was in the 1989-90 season.

Fulham were crushed at home by Southampton. The Londoners were beaten on their home ground by 3-0. The Cottagers at the bottom of the table.

Cardiff City defeated Norwich City by 2-1 at the Millennium stadium in Wales.

At the Emirates stadium,Arsenal overcame Crystal Palace by 2-0. Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the two goals for Arsene Wenger's men as they moved up to 55 points and are now on top of the table.

Liverpool failed to capitalize on the defeat that was suffered by Manchester United as they played a disappointing 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns. The Reds took the lead in the 23rd minute through Daniel Sturridge, but Kolo Toure committed a blunder by passing the ball across the face of goal later in the second half. Victor Anichebe punished the former Arsenal player by slotting the ball past a helpless Simon Mignolet.
