Real Madrid of Spain has ended their 12 year wait for a 10th UEFA Champions league title. The Spanish giants recorded a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the May 24 fianl that was played in Lisbon. Diego Simeone's Atletico team had earlier won the Spanish primera liga after forcing FC Barcelona to a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou on May 18th.
Striker, Diego Costa was pulled out of the match after just 7 minutes of action at the Estadio de Luz. The Spanish star player has been battling with knee injury since April.
Real Madrid started the game well by creating chances, but they failed to convert them. Gareth Bale missed two clear chances in the first half and his team was punished when Diego Godin put Atletico ahead after 36 minutes of action. Carlo Ancelotti's men didn't respond to that goal in a manner many would have expected.
After the restart, Real Madrid stepped up their game, but they failed to break down the resilient Atletico side. The introduction of Isco added some bite to the attack of the 'Galacticos'. Alvaro Morata also joined the party later in the match. The Vincente Calderon-based side were few minutes away from their first ever UEFA Champions league crown, but Sergio Ramos had other ideas.

The Spanish international defender who has been in fine scoring form in the past few games powered home a header in the 3rd minute of injury time to take the match into the extra time.
Gareth Bale scored the second goal for Real while Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo aded two more goals to make it 4-1. Ronaldo has now become the first man to score 17 goals in a single Champions league season. The reigning World footballer of the year also won the 'Pichichi' award for scoring the highest number of goals in the la liga.
The Portuguese also won a joint European golden shoe award with Luis Suarez for scoring 31 league goals.
