The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has shortlisted the top 5 players for the 2012 calendar year. The players were selected based on their performance for club and/or country.
The list includes:
1. Andre Ayew (Ghana)
2. Yaya Toure (Cote d Ivoire)
3. Demba Ba (Senegal)
4. Alex Song (Cameroon)
5. Didier Drogba (Cote d Ivoire)
Ayew plies his trade for Olympique du Marseille of France. He scored some goals for his club and was also impressive for Ghana at the Nations Cup that was held in January.
Yaya Toure was very instrumental for the success of Manchester City in the English premiership. The Ivorian midfielder scored some important goals for City. The English champions won the title for the first time in 73 years. Toure was a prominent member of that squad. Ivory Coast finished second at the AFCON 2012 without conceding a goal during regulation time.
Demba Ba was outstanding for Newcastle United. His 17 goal mark propelled his club to the 5th position at the end of the 2011/12 EPL season. He was also a delight to watch for the 'Teranga' Lions of Senegal that failed to qualify for South Africa 2013.
Alexander Song was a prominent figure in the Arsenal squad that defiled all odds to qualify for this season's UEFA Champions League. His ability to break opponents' flow of play was the hallmark of his performance. He also scored some vital goals for the 'Gunners' before he joined Barcelona.
Didier Drogba has also been nominated as one of the best FIFA Ballon d'or players for 2012. The ex-Chelsea star was the cynosure of all eyes in the Champions League and FA cup. Drogba's goals against Napoli,Barcelona and Bayern Munich ended Roman Abrahamovich's nine year pursuit of the Champions League.
Drogba also helped Chelsea to win the English FA cup at the expense of Liverpool. The former African footballer of the year was highly instrumental for the second place finish of Ivory Coast at the 2012 African Nations Cup. His goals ensured that Senegal were knocked out of the race for South Africa 2013 and he also ensured that his nation remains on top of the 2014 FIFA World cup qualifiers.
Drogba moved to Shanghai Shenua in China and he has been banging goals for the Asian club.
The final three nominees will be named later in December. Drogba, Toure and Demba Ba should be part of that list.
