Radamel Falcao lived up to expectations as he scored a brace to take his Europa League goal haul to 10. The Colombian striker was highly instrumental in Atletico Madrid's 4-2 win over Valencia in Madrid on Thursday night. Diego Alves saved shots from Adrian Lopez and Diego of Atletico Madrid in the opening minutes of the game. In the 17th minute, Arda Turan provided a lovely cross for Falcao to nod home his first goal of the night after beating Valencia defenders. Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon has set a new record for the highest number of consecutive home wins in any European club competition. The Portuguese side defeated Athletic Bilbao by two goals to one. Marcelo Bielsa's men missed several scoring chances before the Portuguese side came from a goal down to win 2-1. Former Liverpool defender, Emiliano Insua and Diego Capel erased Jon Borde's 54th minute goal from the Spaniards.
Gorka Iraizoz saved an early free kick that was taken by Insua in the first half. Van Wolfswinkel missed an absolute chance when he put his shot wide off the goal with the Bilbao keeper well beaten. Llorente also missed guided his header after getting to the end of a good cross from Susaeta as the visitors tried to respond to Sporting's early dominance. Minutes later, Joao Pereira was the next Sporting player to threaten the Spaniards. His shot came off the post before Van Wolfswinkel failed to put the ball into the net.
In the second half, a free kick that was taken by Susaeta was deflected by Insua and Aurtenexte poked the ball into the Sporting net. Amorebieta struck the post after another cross from Susaeta.
In the 76th minute Capel's cross was met by Insua with a flying header that gave the Portuguese side a well-deserved equaliser. Capel scored the winning goal for the home side when his powerful shot flew past Iraizoz who was in goal for the Spanish outfit. The return leg will be played in Spain next week and a 1-0 win will be enough for the Spaniards to make it to the final of the competition.
